Skintillate Body Ornaments

Welcome to Skintillate Body Ornaments

Crafting jewelry fills a void in my life. I express myself in every piece of jewelry. My experiences with jewelry organically expand, transforming my work into something closer to who or what I am. Forging my niche as a jeweler by developing two design concepts-Symmetrical Chaos* and Rustic Industrial†.  These design ideas come from observations I have collected from random sources (college art history class, high school metal shop, pictures of the American Industrial Revolution, the West County Dump, Fabergé eggs, the Crown Jewels, good and bad tattoos, Jackson Pollock paintings, transient attire in Berkeley California, the mountain of broken pottery shards behind Aw Pottery, Bodi California, college design and color class, years of pottery wheel throwing, destroyed and/or burnt buildings, etc.) over the years. I craft each piece of jewelry as a unique entity.

I also am an amateur gemologist. When I look for a gemstone I use the four c's (cut, clarity, color, and carat) to choose every stone, so each gem is chosen with the utmost care. I look for the hallmark in every stone, the Chrysoprase is apple green with a slight translucent glow, the Pietersite has a swirly internal chatoyancy and usually is multi-colored.

Crafting jewelry is a part of my everyday thought. I'm always thinking of something new to try, some things work and some things don't. You will see the things that work and no one will see the thing that didn't because I melt them down for later use. I will try to hammer, solder, saw, and set as many ornaments as I can in my lifetime. I instill my thoughts, ideas, and love into each piece. I hope that everyone can see it in my work.

*Symmetrical Chaos- Random symmetrical lines and shape in natural and/or unnatural objects. The symmetrical lines around the pot made by fingers or tools on wheel thrown pottery are an example of unnatural line symmetrical chaos. The symmetrical round shape found when making lampwork beads is an example of unnatural shape symmetrical chaos. In nature, shape symmetrical chaos is found in many places. The best example of natural shape symmetrical chaos is a Shiva Lingam. This is a stone from the Narmada River in India. They are naturally egg shaped, supposedly from rolling down the Narmada River. They are a microcrystalline quartz or jasper. The natural line symmetrical chaos is a little harder to find. The one example of natural line symmetrical chaos is snowflakes.

†Rustic Industrial- This design idea consists of an unfinished, ravaged by time, unkempt side; mixed with a highly polished, extremely finished, refined side. I mix hard straight lines and angles along side beautiful stones, with chaotic non-traditional textures applied with asphalt, cement, brick, wood grain, wire, nails, rope, cord, modified hammers, paper, etc..
